WHO ARE YOU?

1. A book (in fact, a series of books) that has left a lasting impression on me is A Song of Ice and Fire, a series of epic fantasy novels by the American writer George R.R. Martin. Despite the fact that its adaptation Game of Thornes got a ridiculous, unreasonable, annoying ending that pissed every fan of the novel off, A Song of Ice and Fire is probably the most extraordinary epic novel I have ever read. Martin creates an imaginary world composed of several kingdoms, utilizing his outstanding imagination to make everything alive. I read the first book of the series when I was in middle school, and I immediately fell in love with it because it revealed the conflict between humanity and barbarity. I was drawn to every scene of the novel, and I couldn't help thinking about questions like "what will happen after this event?" or "is this king going to die?" It is well worth reading either for fun or deep thinking.

2. I'm Hongrui, and this is my second year at Webb. Last year I was in Mrs.Berzinskas' ELL class, which was helpful and beneficial for me. I'm here to learn new things about the world I have never visited before. I grew up in a Chinese community and studied at Chinese schools for 10 years; now I'm studying everything in a completely different language. I have a wide range of interests, including reading, writing entries for a fiction community, and exploring the world. I am a fanatical fan of novels, fictional ones in particular. I enjoy reading because it enables me to gain fresh experience and new perspectives from the protagonist, whom I have never met before; I may be a writer of fictional novels in the future if I think I am capable to be a good writer. The future career, however, is difficult to decide since a lot could happen in the next few years.

    I haven't read that series. It sounds good! Thanks for introducing me to something new. I'll add it to my list of books to read. I am so glad that you are in my class again, and also, that last year was beneficial to you. I think you are an outstanding writer. You provide great insight, have a unique style, are able to really communicate who you are and your purpose in the things you write. These are qualities that all great writers should have, and YOU have it!

THE NAMESAKE

"Ashoke" means "without sorrow". Ashoke is a man of persistence and sheer will. He recovered from that horrible accident. He didn't get any mental issue or nightmare followed by that accident; rather, he came through and started a new life. Though his past experience is indeed appalling, there's no trace proving that he bothers because of it. JOURNAL QUESTION 5

Journal question 5: WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH In the novel, these are the main slogans used by the Party to psychologically control its people. These slogans indicate an obvious contradictory paradox in themselves. The purpose of these slogans is to create the idea of "doublethink", weakening the individuality and convincing people that everything done by the Party is for the welfare of people and every policy passed by the government is naturally justified. Anyone with normal thoughts and common sense, however, can easily point out the contradictions: war is the opposite of peace; freedom contradicts slavery; ignorance means the lack of strength.
